In 2013 Oxbridge Academy added Dance to their expanding curriculum by hiring dance teacher, Carlos De Barros and accepting seasoned students into their dance program. The Dance Department at Oxbridge Academy seeks to promote a desire for life-long learning in the field. The Oxbridge Academy students will develop an understanding of, and appreciation for, dance as an art form. The students are provided a personalized learning environment that fosters meaningful experiences in performance and non-performance areas of dance through an environment of collaborative learning, critical thinking, and professional partnerships. They will also be developed into future leaders in the field of dance arts education and performance.
Founded in 2011 by Palm Beach philanthropist, Bill Koch, Oxbridge Academy is an independent, coeducational high school that offers students the latest educational technologies to problem-solve, create, innovate and collaborate with many of the leading corporate and cultural institutions around the world.
Oxbridge goes beyond cultivating critical thinking skills to engage students through rigorous, hands-on courses and the Honors Seminar, where students address some of the most advanced topics and issues of the 21st Century. An Oxbridge education extends beyond the classroom, and students are encouraged to participate in original research, service learning projects, athletics, and the arts. Every student benefits from developing skills in teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-expression.
“What I love about Oxbridge, and what drew me to the school, was the environment of “endless opportunities. I am so proud to see our students excelling both in the classroom and on the stage. The future of the Arts program at Oxbridge is bright!” says Carlos De Barros.
The Oxbridge Academy Dance Department classes are structured to accommodate any skill level. Oxbridge strives to make dance available to any student by allowing individuals to replace a PE/Fitness credit for Dance. Opportunities for solo work, attending competitions to earn a Varsity letter, and working with guest teachers and choreographers are available in the upper-level classes.
Performance level classes also participate in multiple shows throughout the year such as the collaborative Oxbridge Annual Dance Concert Showcase, Performing Arts Concerts, school assemblies, and other special events. The Oxbridge Dance Department offers an intense, well-rounded program of styles in ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, choreography, and conditioning. Classes are currently an average of 8 dancers per class, which lends itself to a more one-on-one environment and more opportunities to perform.
Oxbridge is proud that a comprehensive college preparatory education is both geographically and financially possible for their families. With an entirely need-based financial aid program, they are committed to creating a diverse educational culture supporting communities and families throughout Palm Beach County.
Dance Intensive 2015
The Oxbridge Academy Summer Dance Intensive Program is a pre-professional program designed to give motivated and self-disciplined students the opportunity to study dance with Mr. de Barros and other guest artists in a supportive, fun environment. Currently, no audition is required, but the program is for intermediate to advanced dancers from age 12-18. There may also be a few split classes, which will be done by age categories 12-14, and 15 and older.
Dancers should have a minimum of four years of consecutive training in ballet, jazz, and/or modern.
Mr. de Barros is very excited to share his love and dedication for the “art of dance” with this new generation of artists during this week long intensive. His personal style and teaching methods are valuable to help encourage and motivate serious students who may want to pursue dance as a career, continue training over the summer, and/or stay in shape. He and the guest artists are passionate about teaching and enjoy helping students reach their FULLEST potential!
The program is structured to advance the technical and performance skills of dancers in a wide variety of techniques, allowing them to be challenged physically and artistically, to be better prepared in today’s dance world. Students will attend classes in ballet, modern, jazz, musical theater, tap, contemporary, conditioning, Zumba, yoga, and floor barre.
